Amalfi is the oldest of the maritime republics, a symbol of the Amalfi Coast, and an enchanted place, as well as a tourist centre of international fame. Tradition tells us that the Amalfitans were the first to use the compass during their navigation, identifying the inventor with the name of Flavio Gioia. Also fundamental are the Tavole Amalfitane, which for centuries represented the basis of maritime law in the Mediterranean.
Founded by the Romans in the fourth century A.D. (as evidenced by some archaeological remains of the imperial period) and made autonomous by the Byzantine Empire in 839, Amalfi made trade with the East the pivot of its wealth. It was in the 11th century that it reached its maximum splendour, when it was equipped with a powerful and agile fleet with docks in the main Mediterranean ports. Of the masonry arsenal, used for the construction of the hulls of combat galleys, only two lanes divided by ten pillars remain today, as the opposite part was sucked in by the sea following an underwater landslide, caused by a powerful Libeccio current in the night between 24th and 25th November 1343. Amalfi then lost its commercial importance, its independence and its status as a Maritime Republic, and together with all the other towns of the Coast, which had been beautiful places rich in history to be read in the sumptuous palaces adorned with frescoes, in churches, marbles, columns and fountains, began to become a modest village that, deprived of the wealth that came from trade on the sea, returned to the traditional economy that came from fishing, crafts and agriculture.
The mild climate and architectural beauty made the town one of the favourite stages of the Grand Tour in Costiera when, in the second half of the nineteenth century, Ferdinand II of Bourbon had the coastal road built from Vietri sul Mare to Positano. Even today, reaching Amalfi from land or sea is still an intense emotion. Today’s inhabited centre, which rises partly on a slope, represents the deep sense of Mediterranean architecture, which reveals itself in its white houses with barrel vaulted vaults that embrace each other, in the alleys that plunge into the cool shade of the subportico, in the watchtowers. It was from the first decades of the twentieth century, however, that the appeal of the landscape beauty of the places and the suggestions deriving from their past rich in history have attracted the attention of an increasingly large number of admirers, returning to Amalfi and its coast a leading position in the international arena.
The working of handmade paper, called “bambagina”, was one of the most ancient activities of the Amalfi people, and even today this tradition remains as a sign of identity and culture.
A visit to the town would be incomplete if it did not include a visit to the Paper Museum in via delle Cartiere 24, at the historic Cartiera Milano.
