Positano is the oldest place of the Amalfi Coast, and its origin is lost between history and myth. The name probably derives from the Phoenician word Pesitan, which means Neptune, and is linked to a legend according to which, during a storm, refugees on a sailing boat from the East carrying a sacred icon heard a voice say “pose” and interpreted it as the willingness of Our Lady to go to land where a Church was then built dedicated to her.
It is believed that the town was founded in the ninth century around a Benedictine abbey, and then enlarged with the arrival of the inhabitants of Paestum, terrorized by the incursions of the Saracens on the Amalfi Coast. When in 1268 it was sacked by the Pisans, the town changed its urban planning in order to defend itself and became similar to Amalfi with narrow streets, rock climbing houses, fortifications and watchtowers. From every point of the village you can admire the multicolored majolica dome of the Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta, guardian of the icon of the Black Madonna of Byzantine inspiration and dating back to the eighteenth century. The history of Positano is all ups and downs, like its streets: destroyed in 1343 by a terrible seaquake, since the fifteenth century it suffered continuous devastation by Ottoman pirates. In the eighteenth century a period of splendor began thanks to thriving traffic, but after the unification of Italy, and with the advent of new trade routes, the town again began to decline, so much so that it became a very poor village of fishermen who began to emigrate en masse to the United States. It was with the construction of Statale 163 that Positano began to rise (first, in fact, the village was connected to the rest of the world and the coast only through impervious mountain paths), and to be known by the first tourists, an elite holidaymaker made up of intellectuals, artists, and celebrities who from the beginning of the twentieth century chose this part of the Amalfi Coast as an exclusive resort.
The Spiaggia Grande is the seaside heart of the country, as well as one of the largest and most social beaches of the Coast, frequented by artists, actors and the international jet-set. For those who want to have something more private there is Fornillo beach, reachable by a path that starts from the Spiaggia Grande along the sea and the Saracen towers of sighting. From the sea Positano appears almost like a shell striated with different colors, from the green of the Lattari Mountains that crown it up to the white, pink and yellow of its Mediterranean houses, the silver grey of the pebble beaches and finally the blue of its sea. In Roman times splendid villas were built on the coast, as evidenced by some remains at the Church of the Assumption. Off the coast, the three islets of Li Galli, called “le Sirenuse” for the legend that wanted them as a refuge of the enchanting sirens, still give off a particular magic.
