A picturesque town between Positano and Conca dei Marini, whose name derives from the Greek Pelagianum, or “open sea”, Praiano is the country of the most romantic sunsets of the Amalfi Coast, a place that has been able to maintain its character intact without being overwhelmed by mass tourism. Once praianesians were famous as corallaries and used to wear a left lobe earring according to Saracen tradition. Due to its serene and suggestive beauty Praiano became the summer residence of the Doges, when it was part of the area of influence of the Republic of Amalfi.
The structure of the village resumes the typical scheme of the Coast, and develops at the base of Monte Tre Pizzi extending to Marina di Praia, the suggestive beach situated at the end of the Praia valley and nestled between high rocky cliffs. This natural landing place, used since the times of the ancient Plagianum, is dominated by a medieval tower belonging to the network of sightings and signalling the arrival of Saracen pirates. One of the typical characteristics of the town are the staircases, which reach several really suggestive points of the municipal territory. Capo Sottile divides Praiano from its hamlet of Vettica Maggiore, where there is the Gavitella cove, a beach with a very special exposure that allows it to be illuminated by the sun from dawn to dusk, unlike the other beaches of the Coast. This beach has a wonderful view of Positano and the island of Capri, a watchtower built in the Spanish period and a natural reservoir located inside a cave called “Fontana dell’ Altare”.
Among the places to visit are the Church of San Luca Evangelista, with a splendid majolica floor, the Church of San Gennaro and the Church of Santa Maria a Castro, near the convent of San Domenico, located in an elevated place in the Campo Valley, from which you can enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the area. By sea you can reach the beach of La Praie, perfect for those seeking a romantic loneliness. The Furore Fjord is one of the most fascinating places on the Amalfi Coast. Furore, a strong name for what is called “the village that’s not there”, since in reality it doesn’t have the shape of an inhabited village but rather of scattered houses clinging to the rock. From the road that winds between Amalfi and Positano, here suddenly appears the cascade of olive trees and vineyards that seems to want to dive into the blue of the Fjord. In the past it was a small stronghold with very few inhabitants under the influence of Amalfi, always impregnable because of its geographical position. On the beach at the foot of the cliff there are some “monazzeni”, ancient fishermen’s houses restored in recent years that in the past gave shelter to characters such as Ruggieri di Agerola, a bandit also remembered by Boccaccio in Decameron, the heretic “Fra’ Diavolo” and the founder of the sect of Sacconi. Near the “monazzeni” there is also an old paper mill and a mill.
