In a wonderful panoramic position, lying on a rocky spur of the Lattari mountains that divides the Dragon valley from those of the Rheginna, Ravello is universally recognized as the city of music. Its spectacular view of the gulf, its natural and artistic beauties, its unique atmosphere of solitude and silence, its gardens and panoramic views make it a very appreciated place to stay. In this spectacular balcony from which you can enjoy a unique setting, musicians, artists and writers, including Ruskin, Mirò, Echer, Gide, Lawrence, Turner drew inspiration for their works. Even the musician R. Wagner imagined, in the park of Villa Rufolo, the fairy garden of Klingsor of his masterpiece,”Parsifal”.
The town, made up of small houses, twisted streets, villas and churches, preserves its medieval appearance. The birth of the city could date back to the IV-VI century A.D., as evidenced by sarcophagi, cinerary urns, tombstones found on the territory. In any case, the first certain information about Ravello dates back to the ninth century, when it became part of the Maritime Republic of Amalfi. And it is precisely to Amalfi that Ravello owes its name; in fact, despite being a possession of Amalfi, when it rebelled against the Normans, Ravello wanted to remain to these latter faithful and for this reason the Amalfians called that place “Rebello” from which Ravello. Thanks to the traffic and commercial activities in all the cities of the Mediterranean, between the X and XIII centuries the town reached its greatest splendour in the economic, commercial and cultural field. For the loyalty shown to the Normans, in 1086, by Ruggero of Altavilla, called Borsa, son of Roberto il Guiscardo, it was elevated by Pope Vittore III to Episcopal Seat, with the privilege of being directly dependent on the Roman Seat. Returning under the protection of Amalfi and having helped her in 1135 giving time to Roger the Norman to come and defeat the Pisan invaders, she suffered revenge in 1137 three horrible days of devastation and plundering by the Pisans themselves, who had already plundered and destroyed the city of Amalfi. Resumed from the grave defeat, the city continued to be for another two centuries a rich and flourishing artistic, religious and cultural centre. Since the fifteenth century, due to the transfer to Naples of the main noble families and other political and natural events, a slow decline began, which culminated in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
Foreign travelers and, above all, artists, who in the 19th century praised its fame for its natural and artistic beauty, are credited with the merit of having begun the civil, economic and cultural rebirth of Ravello. And today this fascinating town has become an important centre of international tourism.
