You will notice that many houses have been built with a strange inclination. When the goods were hoisted outside with the pulley, the inclination kept the load away from the façade. You will notice the hoist beam, perpendicular to the façade and fitted with a hook that served, even today it serves, to pull up the furniture from the outside, since the stairs are almost always too steep and narrow. Always in the façade of many houses you can see the “Spy”, a mirror that allows you to watch the road from the inside without being seen.

Bicycles and cars do not always coexist peacefully with the city canals: every year they fish out 10,000 bicycles from the canals, together with 50 corpses and many cars that take a dip in the water, so much that there is a section of the city’s police, appointed to fishing out, called Grachtenvissers, literally fishermen of the canals.

As it is known, soft drugs in Holland are tolerated, not legalized, but only if consumed in a discreet way and within authorized premises. The Coffee shops are places where cannabis is legally sold and consumed. Coffee shops can legally hold up to 500 grams of marijuana and sell up to 5 grams to a customer who is at least 18 years old. Most of the Coffeeshops do not sell alcohol, but usually only soft drinks and snacks. All Coffeeshops have their own “menu” from which to choose: there are different types of weed and hascisc, more or less strong. It is advisable to ask the staff before buying and especially for consumption, if you decide to do so.

In addition to the Coffeeshops you can come across Smart shops, stores selling stimulating substances such as Ephedra, Guarana, aphrodisiacs like Muira Puama and Gingko Biloba, various pipes and souvenirs. They also sell the so-called “magic mushrooms” or hallucinogenic mushrooms, whose effect is clearly related to the name. Of course it is better to evaluate the opportunity to try these substances given the risks that ensue.

The Red Light District (or ‘ Rossebuurt ‘ as it is called by local people) takes its name from the neon lights of the storefronts where the prostitutes pose waiting for customers.

Remember that it is forbidden to take pictures of the girls in the windows and the neighborhood, you may find yourself in trouble and with your the camera seized. As this is an area that is always very crowded you will have to pay attention to pickpockets and petty thieves and, especially at night, to attackers. From the appointment houses to the strip and lap-dance clubs, from gay bars to cinemas, from hardcore video stores to sex-shops, to museums. In the city there are 3 Red Light Districts: The Walletjes area (the most famous and popular, in the streets between the central Station and Nieuwmarkt), the Singel area (between Raadhuistraat and the Central station) and the area in the Pijp district (near the Rijksmuseum). Prostitution in Amsterdam, as in the whole of the Netherlands, is legal from 1815 and from 1996 is taxed by the Dutch government.

On the red light theme there are also several museums in the city:

It is located in the heart of the Red District, 5 floors dedicated to the world of eroticism that reflect the history of the area. Oz. Achterburgwal 54

An extensive collection of erotic paintings, objects and ‘ traditions ‘ belonging to different eras and cultures.

In this shop totally dedicated to the condom, from the most conventional to the most bizarre, in some cases also hand-painted, you will also find a section with informative pamphlets and books illustrating the dangers of relationships without use of protection, and, inevitable , a small prophylactic museum. Warmoesstraat 141
