MARKETS

The local markets in Bali are still the center of everyday life: where the main business is held, where you meet and form social relations, where you pass the time. All the villages, even the smallest ones, have at least one important market of reference, often outdoors and strategically located in the city centre or, if the village is near the sea, directly on the beach to easily receive the fish brought ashore by the fishermen.

For us Western tourists the market is definitely a place to visit in order to come in close contact with the locals. Markets are usually outdoors, with just a few tents to protect the products on sale from the heat of the sun, and you’ll find a little bit of everything: exotic vegetables and fruits, freshly caught fish, live animals in cages (from chickens to bats), spices, jewellery and finely decorated fabrics. Do not be frightened by the chaos, screams or the often strong and pungent smells, visiting a market in Bali is part of the list of things to do!

SHOPPING

Bali is an important tourist destination for both the easterners and westerners and in the main cities you can easily find shopping malls and souvenir shops that conform to our European standards.

But if you want to do some real shopping by buying local items and maybe getting some good deals, do not be fascinated by the shop windows but rather turn to local markets, perhaps less sparkling and clean but much more authentic.

The products you could buy are handmade silver jewellery, or the colorful handmade fabrics, woven according to the methods of the past, wooden statuettes often depicting the Hindu gods, tea and spices.

Remember that in these parts it is custom to haggle over the price of the goods, for this reason the seller starts from an exaggeratedly high price to allow you to retort and lower it. So never accept the first offer even if you think you have a good deal.
