The nightlife in Lisbon is generally considered among the best in Europe, because this city loves the night and lives it as a cheerful moment. Bars, pubs and nightclubs are constantly increasing, as well as theaters and discos, but the scenery is constantly evolving. The atmosphere is nice and cozy (even with overflowing rooms), and there are very few signals of unpleasant incidents. Among other things, at night the old districts are enlivened by the sound of guitars and the singing of Fado, the musical expression of Lisbon citizens soul. Fado Houses, unique in their kind, are places where you can taste the excellent local cuisine and listen to this kind of music. Usually a night-out continues throughout the night because bars do not close until 2.00, and clubs are open until 6.00 or even later. There is a wide selection of options offered and they are able to satisfy different tastes, in any case quality and fun are always guaranteed.
In particular there are four large areas to bear in mind: Avenida 24 de Julho (Alcantara, especially bars and nightclubs), Bairro alto (restaurants, bars and nightclubs), the Docas (Doca de Alcântara, former port warehouse area become an area full of restaurants, bars and nightclubs) and Parque das Nações (mainly restaurants and bars). Avenida 24 de Julho is a long boulevard with bars and nightclubs, usually very busy at night and not far from the Docas. Bairro Alto has always been one of the favourite places for nightlife enthusiasts, gaining over the years a unique style that distinguishes it from other areas, especially because it is located in the oldest part of the city. Here you can find restaurants open until late, with a wide selection of typical Portuguese dishes as well as international. The Docas are one of the liveliest areas of Lisbon’s nightlife, with a lot of restaurants, bars, cafes and nightclubs for an unforgettable night. Lastly, Parque das Nações, the most modern part of the city where Expo 98 was organized; there are futuristic buildings and a beautiful view of the river. Here you can find many trendy restaurants and bars, with Portuguese and international dishes.
If Lisbon does not satisfy your desides, then you will find the biggest Casino in Europe in Estoril, with its large number of games and an excellent entertainment show. As an alternative Cascais offers a lot of restaurants for an evening on the sea.
Lisbon is a city full of family-friendly attractions that has a lot to offer to those travelling with children because it is safe… You’ll be spoilt for choice!
The first stop could be a visit to the Oceanarium (www.oceanario.pt), inaugurated in 1998, where 450 species of fish, birds and mammals are hosted, for a total of 15,000 specimens divided into 4 different habitats (Atlantic, Indian, Pacific Ocean and Antarctic). In addition to guided tours, the youngest will be involved in a huge number of recreational-educational activities, including sleeping next to the Sharks ‘ pool.
From the sea to the land, enjoy a short stroll to the Zoo (www.zoo.pt). Here children will learn to know the animals (about 3,500 are hosted) and play in the equipped areas. If you are looking for “alternative” emotions, your children will certainly be excited to discover Lisbon from a different perspective, for example from the top of the cable-car, looking at the Tagus and the Nations Park. As an alternative go on board the legendary tram 28 running through the picturesque narrow streets, along a tortuous jorney up and down the town. It will be possible to combine fun and learning at the knowledge pavilion and at the Gulbenkian Planetarium (planetario.marinha.pt). The first one offers a rich program of activities, from the amusing experiments of physics, the cooking workshops, the building of a well-functioning miniature house, to group games of all kinds; The second one is a way for children to get closer to the world of astronomy, “camping with the stars” or virtually exploring a black hole, the moon and the planets.
In Kidzania (www.kidzania.pt), a unique theme park and true reproduction of a real miniature city, children from 3 to 15 years will be able to choose which of the 60 professional activities proposed practise (policeman, pilot, dentist, lawyer…). A mixture of fiction and reality in which children will also learn the value of money and how to earn it.
You have to visit São Jorge Castle (www.castelodesaojorge.pt) from which you can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view of the city’s historic districts. Your offspring will also be able to daydream about a thousand and more adventures of brave knights, romantic princesses and fearful dragons, but also admire a collection of puppets from all over the world in the Puppet Museum.
Finally, if you want to teach your children respect for nature and its inhabitants, at Vertigem Azul you can enjoy watching dolphins and a lot of birds in their habitat. All this in the beautiful setting of the Sado River estuary and the Atlantic Ocean.
