Palermo is a seaside city bathed by the waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea with much of its natural border formed by the coast. This solar city, given the strategic location, houses the important port of “Cala”. This ancient port is famous until recently for having been the point of mooring of numerous boats, which daily went out to fish or to carry goods or sand. These rowing boats, with specific characteristic according to their use, were done by the “axe-masters”, called by the fishermen in Palermo “i mastri consaioli” or the “conza varchi” local linguistic expressions with the meaning of “those who make boats”. They availed themselves of an ancient experience, handed down from father to son for generations, to create handmade these splendid boats, with the help of a particular instrument called “axe”.
The most built and widespread boats were those used for in-shore fishing, consisting of the classic “Lancitedda” (a spear) and the “uzzarieddu” (goiter), called “Vuzzarieddu” in the dialect. They were characterized by a bow higher than the stern which guaranteed greater manoeuvrability and speed. Other typical boat was the traditional “schifazzù”, barge used mainly for the transport of things and people, especially for sand, ashlars of tuff and fish. Widely spread also the “Capaciote”, large and light boat, but also solid, suitable especially for the longer travel. They are so named because of the village of Capaci, which included the Isola delle Femmine (island of the females). The “Sardara” was the boat used for the fishing of sardines and anchovies; instead the “Alalungara”, with the same typical characteristics as “Sardara”, was the typical fishing boat for the albacore, a fish not rare in the Palermo coasts.
