Turin rose in the flat land defined by the rivers Stura di Lanzo, Sangone and Po and it is a city rich of charm with more than two thousands years of history. Some ancient documents talk about a small village at the foot of the Alps, called Taurasia, destroyed by Hannibal and became a military citadel in the Roman Edge.
It was ruled by the Ostrogoths, the Franks and Lombards and had remained a fringe city for centuries, until its proclamation as capital City of the Duchy of Savoy, becoming for the first time an important center and of the greatest Baroque capitals. Moreover, the city became in 1713, when the dukes of Savoy obtained the title of King of Sicily and Sardinia, the capital city of the kingdom, with over 16000 inhabitants. It is the first capital city of Italy, from 1861 to 1965 and had also an important role in the fight against the fascism: it is in fact known the slaughter of Turin of the 18th of December 1922, which caused the death of 11 fascists and the fire of the Camera del Lavoro (the center for Italian Syndicalist labor unions) of the city by the fascists led by Piero Brandimarte. After the second post-war period, Turin was the symbol of the Italian economic growth; this way it attracted thousands of emigrants from the South of Italy due to the demand for labor in the car factories. You should not forget that Turin has also had a religious importance since when the Duke Emanuele Filiberto moved definitively from Chambery the Holy Shroud: the shroud that would have wrapped the dead body of Jesus Christ, according to the tradition.
Industrial city, center of production and trade, third economic polo of the Country: Turin is gaining a new and innovative image thanks to the role of capital of contemporary art. Examples of this are the recovery of the Lingotto’s industrial area, which hosts the main Fiat factory and which today is a Exhibition Center thanks to the architect Renzo Piano; the stadium Stadio Olimpico; the Palaolimpico and the Ova. Turin is a modern city, always in motion, which looks ahead towards a future already begun: the city is equipped for fairs, congresses and conventions; moreover it can guarantee not only facilities and business services, but also a 360-degrees offer: this allowed the city to be part, together with Florence, Venice and Rome, of the “3-star cities” list by the prestigious Michelin Guide. Moreover, the city offers a unique quality of life made of art, culture, gastronomy and nature. Its position at the foot the Occidental Alps, the four rivers, the parks and the gardens made Turin one of the greenest European cities
As for the free time, the city can satisfy every taste. During the daytime you can go for a walk passing by the historic streets or under the 18 kilometers porches, admiring the shop-windows of the high fashion brands or visiting the workshops of artisans and local artists. You can also wonder about the numerous markets: from Porta Palazzo, the largest European outdoor market, to the Balon, the famous flea market; from local markets to those selling typical food products. Do you want to take a break? The choice is wide. Turin is rich of historical cafes, trattorias (here called Piole) and famous restaurants where you can taste the typical local products: breadsticks, cheeses, truffles, chocolates ( the most famous one is the gianduiotto, a piece of Piedmontese nut chocolate) and prestigious wines. What about the Turinese nightlife? The ares most frequented by locals and tourists are the Roman quarter and the quarters of Borgo Dora and San Salvario, which are rich of bars, clubs and wine bars. For the sports lovers, Turin offers a lot of incredible possibilities: there are many sports facilities and structures where you can watch or take part to challenges of football, swimming, basket, running and sports on ice.The city hosts every year also international sports events like the XX Winter Olympic Games, the event that brought a worldwide attention to the city. You can live again those emotions by visiting the first Italian Olympic Museum, set up by the Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali.
