Turin is the city of the sport.
It is known for the football, but also for the so called “minor” sports: here take place many international sport events of fencing, basket, athletic and golf. Turin boasts of a long sports history: in 1844 it was the place were the first Italian gymnastic society, the Reale Ginnastica, was formed; 1863 was the year of the Italian Alpine Club; 1879 of the Turin Fencing Club; 1889 the Cerea; 1901 of the first Ski Club; 1959 was the year of the birth of the summer Universiade, followed by the winter ones in 1966. Despite that, it is the football that has the primary role in the city. In 1897 it was founded for the will of the students of the high school Liceo Classico Massimo d’Azeglio the Sport Club Juventus, and a few years later another Football Club was founded from the previous one: the Football Club Torino. These are the two teams that has melted the hearts of the fans and has given unforgettable victories to the city for years. How can we forget the successes of the Grande Torino at the time of Valentino Mazzola and Bacigaluppo; or the numerous Juve’s triumphs thanks to football-players like Sivori, Platini, Vialli and Del Piero. Turin was also chosen as the seat of the XX Winter Olympic Games of 2006, a worldwide event of such a unique importance that was the most watched TV program of 2006 in the world, with its 1,8 billion viewers, and won two Emmy Awards. The city was also the seat of European Championships of Short Track, of the European Indoor Athletics Championships, of the basketball finals of ULUB CUP, of the World Air Games in 2009 and of the World Figure Skating Championships of 2010.
